Speaking and media

I speak about cybersecurity, AI, and keeping young people safe online. If you’re a journalist on deadline, email me directly.

Topics

These all come from work I’ve done myself. Each one can be pitched to a technical audience or to a board.

Cybersecurity & National Security

Securing a company as it separates

What it takes to move a semiconductor company off its parent's infrastructure, systems and identity, and stand up its own security program. Drawn from leading Altera's separation from Intel.

Cybersecurity & National Security

Making a security program legible to the board

Boards don’t fund what they don’t understand. How to explain technical risk in terms an audit committee can act on.

AI & the Future of Security

Verifying reality: trust after deepfakes

A $25M wire transfer approved on a video call where every other participant was fake. Why training people to spot fakes isn’t enough, and what has to change in how payments get approved.

AI & the Future of Security

Governing AI agents like privileged users

An AI agent with credentials and tool access is a privileged account. What twenty years of managing identities already teaches us, and how to apply it.

Mentoring the Next Generation

A career in cybersecurity

For students and young professionals. What the work really is, how to get in, and what the people hiring are actually looking for.

Mentoring the Next Generation

Keeping children safe online

What parents, schools and policy makers can do about children’s privacy and safety online. I built a company to protect children’s information, and the talk draws on that.

Formats

These are talks and sessions, not advisory engagements.

Conference keynote

Twenty to forty minutes on one idea, drawn from real work rather than a vendor pitch.

Panels and moderation

Comfortable either seat. I will disagree with the other panelists where I actually disagree, which is usually the point of the panel.

Board and leadership sessions

Forty-five minutes and questions for a board, audit committee or leadership team on security and AI risk.

Interviews and commentary

On the record for journalists, including on deadline. I have been a named source when the story was uncomfortable.

School and university sessions

Talks and Q&A with students on security careers and staying safe online. I keep it plain and use real examples.

Coverage

Articles I’ve written and stories that quote me, newest first.

Long bio (150 words)

Mukul Kumar is CISO at Altera, the semiconductor company, where he is leading security through its separation from Intel. It is his second time in the role. He first ran Altera’s security from 2008 to 2016, including security due diligence for Intel’s $16.7 billion acquisition. He was CISO at Marvell Technology from 2021 to 2023, reporting to the CEO and the board, and earlier at Balbix and Cavirin.

He founded Presence Global, a privacy and child online safety company, and sold it. He began his career at Microsoft and then McKinsey.

With 25 years in security, Mukul writes and speaks on cybersecurity, AI and online safety. He also mentors students and young security professionals in India.
